Reflections on the work of Annette Horn

Life is movement. Formed matter is spiritual energy. Photography is aesthetic information.

These three sentences describe the creative credo of the British-German photoartist.

Two systems are apparent in Annette Horn’s work – artistic beaty and natural beauty – and both to the optimal mutual benefit of each other.

She is aware that experiencing art is meaningless for the observer unless the work arouses emotions. The artist intuitively aspires to a further purpose: the work of art detaches itself from the material and develops its own spiritual power.

Regarding her work, Annette Horn rightly considers herself to be a discoverer rather than a finder. With the artist's own words, "I am looking for something which I know exists, but that I cannot yet see. It is the camera which enables me to go beyond the physical limitations of my eyes, to make visible a moment of which the form and design would otherwise remain undiscovered."

Gedanken zu den Arbeiten von Annette Horn:

Leben ist Bewegung. Gestaltete Materie ist geistige Energie. Fotografie ist ästhetische Information. Diese drei Sätze beschreiben gewissermaßen das kreative Credo der englisch-deutschen Photokünstlerin.

In Annette Horns Bildwerken wirken zwei Systeme - das Kunstschöne und das Naturschöne - zum beidseitigen Vorteil bestens zusammen. Ihr ist sehr bewusst: Das Erleben von Kunst bleibt für den Betrachter ohne Bedeutung, wenn das Werk keine Emotionen auslöst. Und intuitiv erstrebt die Künstlerin eine weitere Bestimmung an: Das Kunstwerk löst sich vom Materiellen und entwickelt seine eigene spirituelle Kraft.

Annette Horn sieht sich bei ihrem Schaffen zu Recht eher als „Erfinderin" denn als „Finderin". Mit den eigenen Worten der Künstlerin: „Ich bin auf der Suche nach etwas, von dem ich weiß dass es existiert, dass ich aber noch nicht sehen kann. Erst die Kamera ermöglicht mir, über die physische Begrenzung der Augen hinaus, einen Moment sichtbar zu machen, der sonst in dieser Form und Gestalt unentdeckt bliebe.“ Und ihr Schlusswort: "Oh yes, Photography was my lifechanging Experience.“
